The Moor hosted the launch of Off the Shelf

Now established as one of the largest literary festivals in the UK, the festival opened with a free event for all the family; Poetry & Performance held on The Moor in the city centre from 11am–3pm & included performances from a selection of talented poets and singer songwriters along with walkabout circus acts.

As part of the opening event on The Moor Magid Magid, Lord Mayor of Sheffield, introduced his newly appointed Lord Mayor’s Poet Laureate of Sheffield; Otis Mensah at 1.10pm, which was followed by a storming performance by Otis that enthralled the crowd. He says: “Mensah will be for the first Poet Laureate for the city. The appointment of Mensah is my commitment to champion the amazing talent and diversity of the city’s arts scene. Off the Shelf is the perfect platform to introduce Mensah to the people of Sheffield.” The new position of Poet Laureate is an honorary one, for which there is no payment. The role will be for two years and will include a set of commissions, workshops and events. Mensah, who was born and raised in Sheffield, has been receiving growing attention in the UK and internationally as a poet and hip-hop artist.

Amanda Phillips, Centre Manager for The Moor said: "We were delighted to host the launch of Off the Shelf here on The Moor. It is a great literature festival that is for everyone from all communities. The Moor attracts thousands every day so shoppers were able to take a break and enjoy listening to some pop up poetry as well be entertained by some amazing walkabout circus acts.”
